Welcome to
Red Rose Kennels
Conservation breeder of Nederlandse Kooikerhondje based in Portland, Oregon
As long as I can remember I've always wanted a dog, but growing up in a small apartment in Vienna, Austria, it was just never in the cards. Shortly before my 16th birthday my mother and I moved to Northern California to take care of my grandmother. Since we would be living in a big house in the countryside, I would finally be able to have the dog I had always dreamed of! That was all the convincing I needed to pack up my life and move across the globe. After much research on the various breeds of dogs, my mother and I settled on the Hungarian Vizsla. Two days after our plane landed we drove to Nevada to pick up my puppy, Dimitri. It was ten days before Christmas and I couldn't have wished for a better present.
His companionship sparked a love for all aspects of the dog world that still burns strong today. My path in conformation dog shows was a whirlwind that began at the 2013 Vizsla National Specialty. While still in high school I showed him to his championship as well as putting several titles on him, and competing in Junior Handlers. We were even awarded an Award of Merit by the Vizsla Club of Northern California. I went on to try out several sports with him over the years as well as finishing his grand championship. I now own his niece, Percy, who I showed to her grand championship as a breeder-owner-handler. She is accomplished in many venues as well as the whelping box, and I'm still involved with vizslas to this day. The breed has shaped me from a young age and I wouldn't be who I am today without them. They have brought many people who are very important to me into my life, including my husband. He grew up with a Vizsla in Germany and it was the first thing we spoke about on our first date many many years ago.
I got involved with Kooikers though my husband. He spotted a group of Kooikers at a dog show and couldn't resist saying hello to the eye-catching little spaniels. After a small mishap he spent the next several hours talking with a Kooiker breeder. He came back to our set-up and upon seeing me he looked me in the eye and declared:"I want one". Four months later he flew to New Hampshire to pick up our ten week old Kooiker puppy, Ophelia.
We have been active participants in the breed community, establishing good relationships with other breeders and owners, traveling to Nation Specialties, out of state shows and hosting meet-the-breed events. We are passionate about bringing this rare Dutch breed into the spotlight and hope others will love them as much as we do.

Ophelia is our first Kooiker, and what a dog to begin our journey in the breed with. She has sparked our love and dedication with her loyalty and fearlessness. She is very cuddly and affectionate with her people and there is nothing she loves more than being outside. She is an incredible companion who loves to accompany us wherever we are going; a cafe, the beach, a hike or the office. Her compact size and hardy disposition make her ready and willing to tackle anything.
